  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, or 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices of French bread
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. In a slow cooker, add sliced onions, olive oil, butter, thyme, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Stir until combined.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours.
  4. About 30 minutes before serving, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Arrange French bread slices on a baking sheet and toast in the oven until golden brown.
  6. Serve the soup hot, topped with toasted bread and cheese.
